Chronic Torment: Demons of chaos
27/10/09 || Trauma
You like dirty, alcohol fueled death metal from Sweden? What’s that? Speak up, your production is making it hard to understand. In some ways I could make this review extremely short because this is some simple, dirty, heavy death metal. It’s the kind that some people shit out song after song in the business. Not exceptional, not horrible, but consistently varying to some degree somewhere in between.
I first heard Chronic Torment scanning through a list on MySpace (this was a couple years ago so… not too clear). Whatever the case, I checked out their website and they had their whole discography up for download, which I obliged. For being free, I certainly didn’t complain at all, and had the albums on a playlist for when I would listen to music, be it for masturbation/crying sessions, or video games. Every time I heard them come on, though, I kept wondering “Wait a sec, what band is this?”. They kinda have that problem, and it doesn’t change too much with this new album.
There’s just a lack of individuality in the music. Scratch that, there’s a lack of extroversion. It just doesn’t stand out all that much to me. Instruments are played fine. The drumming is good, vocals are fine, and the guitars are stripped down and have that Swedish distortion. It can get groovy, no doubt. The production, though, is a major low point. I’m not expecting something pristine, but if this could be less muddy, I’d be happier.
So, what does this all boil down to, you may ask? Should I purchase this record or what, motherfucker? If I bought it, I probably wouldn’t be all too stoked, especially when albums cost around $15-20 USD nowadays. It’s not terrible, but it’s certainly not going to make you a die hard fan. I’d hold off on recommending a purchase, and I’d offer a very cautious “Check them out on either MySpace or their website, and then decide from there.”
